STELLA SCHOLA CHAPTER of National Junior Honor Society, est. 2004

The 2023-24  Honor Society Advisor is Ms. Judy Ronning-Larson.

National Junior Honor Society is composed of students enrolled at Stella Schola Middle School who have demonstrated the characteristics of excellent scholarship (with a 3.6 grade average or above), character, citizenship, service, and leadership.

Membership Requirements

  • Scholarship
Stella Schola students must maintain a minimum 3.6 GPA
  • Service
This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation. 20 hours a year are required.
  • Leadership
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
  • Character
The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.
  • Citizenship
The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic engagement; has a high regard for freedom and justice; respects democracy; respects the law for all citizens at the local, state, and federal levels; and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility in activities such as scouting, community organizations, or school clubs.

Nominees receive applications in the spring, and the selection process continues forward from there.

Honor Society members participate in various service activities throughout the school year, including an annual Hopelink food drive, and assistance with school special events. Honor Society students exemplify top academics, character, team work and service to others.

Volunteer Opportunities

2023-24 Volunteer Hours Requirement: 20 Hours

Volunteer Ideas to Explore:

Here are some ideas for fulfilling your 20 hours of service:

  • S.O.D.A. Save Our Dog Areas (they care for the Marymoor Dog Park). They have work parties at different times of the year.
  • Special Olympics Washington, we’ll be volunteering with this organization in the spring. They also have opportunities in the summer. Here is their link: https://specialolympicswashington.org/event-volunteers/volunteer-faqs/
    • What are the age requirements to volunteer with Special Olympics Washington?
Youth volunteers between ages 11 – 13 may volunteer with a parent or adult guardian. Teen volunteers between ages 14 – 17 may volunteer in select roles. Sky’s the limit for folks that are 18+!
  • Trout Unlimited: This is an organization I am involved with and we will have 1-2 spring events to take part in. The rain came and that meant river levels rose meaning we couldn’t do our fall events as we had hoped. We will be rescheduling for spring.
  • Parks Clean Up: A great way to earn service hours is to go over to your neighborhood park and do a clean up by picking up trash and disposing of it.
  • Neighborhood Clean Up: Another great way to earn service hours is to clean up your neighborhood, especially some of the many trails that wander through a lot of our neighborhoods.
  • Volunteer at a community organization when they need babysitters during events
  • Volunteer at your church, temple, mosque, etc.
  • Volunteer to help at a children’s camp
  • Volunteer in an elementary classroom with a prior teacher.
  • Volunteer at a retirement home – There are some cool opportunities if you play a musical instrument because sometimes you can go in and provide some music to the residents.
  • Volunteer to do tasks for a Stella teacher or staff member (lots of times I give service hours when I have NJHS students do tasks for me)
  • Volunteer to help with other children’s groups. We had a student last year who volunteered for an entire year with a children’s choir. He earned over 100 service hours!
  • Gift wrapping at Hopelink over the holidays
  • Volunteer at a King County animal shelter to sort food and donations
  • Painting birdhouses for the annual birdhouse auction here at Stella (This happens later this year)
  • Here is an example of a unique service hour fulfillment: A student three years ago spent each Saturday morning on a Teams/Zoom call where he read aloud to young children at an orphanage in India.
